Position Summary

The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute is pleased to offer a full-time, paid, yearlong, post-baccalaureate position that provides young professionals a unique view of the administration of a major international arts institution. This position includes benefits and a monthly housing stipend.

The Lunder Special Assistant (LSA) works closely with the Director in their internal and external responsibilities, engaging with staff across the Clark's various departments. An integral member of the Director’s Office, the LSA reports to the Assistant to the Director in coordination with the Executive Coordinator and Deputy Director. These interactions will provide the LSA with significant access to leadership and management during their yearlong tenure. The LSA will gain a comprehensive perspective of the Clark, thereby preparing the would-be museum professional for diverse opportunities in the field. In addition to their primary responsibilities, the LSA will receive mentorship and guidance towards future paths.

Current seniors (anticipating graduation in May 2025) and recent graduates of colleges and universities in Maine, in addition to Maine residents who will graduate from out-of-state institutions, are invited to apply. The deadline to apply is January 17, 2025. The position begins mid- June 2025.

Hourly Rate: $19.25

Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Draft initial copy for the Director for museum publications, annual reports, and Board of Trustees-related communications.
  • Support activities related to Clark events, including the Clark Prize, which celebrates exceptional writing in the visual arts.
  • Prepare materials (e.g. talking points, slideshows) for the Director's lectures, speaking engagements, and courses in the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art.
  • Assist with managing interns in the Director's Office.
  • Assist with special research projects as requested by the Director.
  • Act as liaison between the Director's Office and the Research and Academic Program, as well as the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art.
  • Serve as front-facing member of the Director’s Office, greeting Clark staff, scholars, donors, and other special guests at the front desk.
  • Complete administrative tasks as necessary.


Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Skills
 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, follow through on projects, and to be proactive and solution-oriented.
  • Understands the need to be responsible for own outcomes and takes pride in delivering the best possible work product.
  • Demonstrates high-level of integrity and discretion.
  • Ability to work independently and as well as part of a small, highly efficient team in a fast-paced and often demanding atmosphere.


Work Experience
 

  • Entry level position.
  • Undergraduate experience in the arts preferred.
